A Vancouver Island hockey club is giving ticket holders and the public an opportunity to get out of the house and safely watch a series of free drive-in movies over two weekends in June.

The series spans two weekends, with Nanaimo Clippers season ticket holders enjoying Onward on June 12 and Toy Story 4 on June 13.

It’s Step Brothers on June 19, followed by Toy Story 4 on June 20 and Onward on June 21.

“It’s an opportunity for families to get out of the house and do something fun together,” said Tali Campbell, general manager for the Nanaimo Clippers.

“This is a continuation of things we have been doing to help out the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Examples include delivering Easter eggs to children and mowing the lawn for seniors.”

He said that this was the first time that the club has put on a drive-in movie event and that it took the club weeks of planning to receive approval from Island Health and the provincial health officer.

“We need to work within the guidelines to make sure safety is the top priority,” said Campbell. “We are allowed 50 vehicles per movie, we cannot have washroom facilities and cars will need to be spaced out accordingly.”

To ensure that uninvited guests don’t show up, the club is withholding the location of the venue until a few days prior to the event.

The club will have security on site to ensure adherence to rules.

The movies are free to watch but the club will accept donations for the Nanaimo Clippers Hockey Society, which awards $10,000 in scholarships every year.

For tickets, you need to enter a draw. A total of 50 applications will be randomly selected for each movie.

The draw takes place May 30 and successful applicants will be notified on June 1.

The location of the venue will be revealed two days prior to the screenings.

Movies will start when it gets dark, at about 9:30 p.m.
