West Shore RCMP seized a loaded handgun during an arrest of a man found unconscious in a stolen vehicle in Colwood on Saturday.

Police received a complaint that the man was unconscious in the driver’s seat of a stolen black Mercedes Benz coup on Six Mile Road near Atkins Avenue. Officers confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Duncan on July 18.

Officers say when they woke the man and attempted to arrest him, he began to fight and a loaded 9mm handgun fell out of his waistband. Officers arrested him and seized the gun.

No shots were fired by either the suspect or police. One officer sustained a hand injury in the struggle.

James Wilkinson, 33, has been charged with six offences, including several firearms-related offences and possession of property obtained by crime for the stolen car.
