A man suffered life-threatening injuries in a fire at a Fisgard Street apartment building Wednesday morning.

The scene has now been turned over to Victoria police.

Victoria Fire Department Deputy Chief Dan Atkinson said the initial 911 call from the incident at 820 Fisgard St. came about 7:30 a.m. The report said smoke was coming from the top floor of the three-storey structure.

When crews arrived they were told by neighbours that someone was trapped inside, he said.

“We made our way into the building,” Atkinson said. “Our members were able to locate a lone male occupant in the suite of origin.”

A reported 12 people evacuated the building, he said.

Police, who were called about 7:40 a.m, said the fire is not believed to be suspicious. Forensic officers are investigating.
