The Nanaimo RCMP detachment was partially evacuated after two suspicious packages were found Tuesday morning.

The RCMP's explosives disposal unit arrived in the afternoon and rendered the items safe, police said.

Two cardboard packages with writing on them were found on the lawn adjacent to the building around 10:30 a.m., said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.

They were found next to a secure parking area, O’Brien said. He would not say what kind of messages were scrawled on the packages but said it “caused us some concern.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage to determine who is responsible for leaving the packages, he said.

Explosive-sniffing dogs were called in to do a preliminary examination of the packages.

One half of the building was evacuated as a precaution and public access to the building was suspended.

Fitzwilliam Street between Milton and Prideaux streets was blocked to traffic.
