Nanaimo officials issue fire warning as early dry conditions up risk

Nanaimo officials are warning people to be careful not to spark fires as early dry conditions carry us into summer.
Bonfire
It was an expensive B.C. Day long weekend for a group of campers who were fined more than $10,000 for having what police called “a rather large bonfire” on tiny Home Island, off the Sunshine Coast.

Nanaimo officials are warning people to be careful not to spark fires as early dry conditions carry us into summer.

The city notes that most brush fires in the city are the result of human carelessness, often because of people throwing cigarette butts out the window of a car or not properly extinguishing them in an ashtray.

Smoking, campfires and barbecues are not permitted in city parks but propane barbecues set on low flame are permitted within the approved locations of the picnic shelters or where a permit is obtained.
