Delta police and B.C. Ferries continue to investigate after a ferry passenger in a vehicle crashed through a barrier and flipped off a loading ramp as a vessel unloaded in Tsawwassen on Tuesday.

The vehicle landed on its roof on pavement about 10 metres below, and the lone occupant was taken to hospital in critical condition.

No update on his condition was available on Wednesday.

The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday as vehicles drove off the Coastal Renaissance ferry in Tsawwassen. The ship had just arrived from Duke Point in Nanaimo.

The last vehicle to unload from the upper car deck accelerated rapidly and smashed through a concrete barrier, said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.

Damage to the ferry berth was minimal, she said.
