West Shore RCMP say they are unable to release any new information on last week’s homicide on Humpback Road.

Police responded to a report of a collision on the winding, narrow, rural road at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of a man inside a sports utility vehicle.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is leading the murder investigation, assisted by West Shore RCMP. The victim’s name has not been released.

“That’s not uncommon for murder investigations,” West Shore RCMP spokeswoman Const. Nancy Saggar said on Tuesday. “The only reason to release someone’s name is if police believe it will further their investigation. But if there’s no investigational need to do it, then we’re bound by privacy laws to withhold the name.”

Police have said they believe this is a targeted crime and that the man who died was the intended victim.

In an earlier interview, Saggar said she couldn’t comment on whether the victim was known to police or whether investigators had any suspects.

Because of the collision, traffic analysts as well as forensic identification officers were working together on the case, she said.

Police asked area residents to review their home-security video surveillance or dash cameras in case suspicious activity has been captured.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit information line at 250-380-6211.
