Campbell River RCMP say they are having to spend valuable time tracking down unreliable information spread on social media about a man believed to have been set on fire this week as he slept under a bridge.

The 20-year-old is recovering from severe burns to his back.

Const. Maury Tyre said every lead is being tracked down and investigated after what he has called “truly an egregious offence.”

“Despite warnings to the public to avoid rumour and conjecture on social media about the case, stories continue to become bigger and bigger,” he said.

The concern is that people will believe that unsubstantiated social media stories are true, Tyre said.

The public is asked to call police with legitimate information at 250-286-6221.
