Saanich police are concerned by reports that kids in a local park were playing darts with used syringes.

A concerned citizen called police about 8:30 a.m. Monday reporting that kids in Hampton Park were throwing the used needles like darts, said Saanich police spokeswoman Sgt. Julie Fast.

When police arrived at the Tillicum-area park, the kids couldn’t be found, but officers collected several uncapped needles and disposed of them.

Officers spoke with parents of small kids playing in the playground to warn them about the needles found, Fast said.

Anyone who finds an improperly discarded needle is advised by Island Health to pick it up carefully, ideally with gloves, and place it in a container with a lid such as a bottle.

Don’t try to replace the needle’s cap or break off the sharp. Wash your hands and drop the container in a community drop box, a participating pharmacy or waste bin, or turn it in to a local public health office.
