Three men face charges after alleged 11th-floor kidnapping in Burnaby

VANCOUVER — Three men are facing kidnapping charges in connection with a dramatic police operation at a Metrotown apartment complex this month.

VANCOUVER — Three men are facing kidnapping charges in connection with a dramatic police operation at a Metrotown apartment complex this month.

On July 4, Burnaby RCMP and officers from the Lower Mainland emergency response team raided a suite at the Horizon Towers on Sanders Street in Burnaby.

Police believed a kidnapping victim was being held inside an 11th-floor apartment.

The Mounties said that when the officers entered the residence three men tried to escape off the balcony.

Two of the men were arrested without incident on lower floors, while another fell to the ground and suffered serious injuries.

Police said the kidnapping victim, who had been held for two days, was found inside the suite and was physically unharmed.

Obinna Njoku, 36, Abdulkadir Handule, 23, and Abdullah Abdullahi, 32, are each facing charges for kidnapping and forcible confinement.

The three men are scheduled to appear in Vancouver provincial court on Monday.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, is still probing the incident to determine whether police actions or inactions led to the man’s injuries.

The IIO is asking anyone who saw the incident to contact its witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
