A pair of commercial trucks caught fire on the Malahat, several hours apart, on Friday.

No one was hurt in either incident.

In the first incident, the Malahat Volunteer Fire Department was called about 7:15 a.m. for a truck fire at the highway and South Shawnigan Lake Road, but the driver had put it out with his fire extinguisher by the time crews arrived.

Firefighters applied foam to the truck.

The Shawnigan Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the second call of a truck in flames about 1:15 p.m.

It had been headed north when the driver noticed smoke and was able to pull off the highway onto Okotoks Drive, said Shawnigan Lake Fire Chief Keith Shields.

The driver had time to get his belongings out of the cab, Shields said.

“We responded with two engines and there was a total of eight members,” he said.

“They extinguished the fire and then turned it over to the RCMP to have it towed.”
