Cold weather broke some Island records over the weekend, but more moderate temperatures have arrived.

“We’ve just completely switched to a warmer stretch here,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan.

Campbell River and Nanaimo were among the weekend cold spots, he said.

“Generally, we talk more about maximum temperatures being broken with climate change.”

Campbell River had a low of -4.2 C on Saturday, beating -2.4 C from 2004. Sunday was -6.3, beating -2.8 from 1978.

Nanaimo was at -4.4 on Sunday, well below the -2.8 set in 1919.

Castellan said Victoria came close to a record low at 0.4 C Sunday at Gonzales. The record for the day is zero, set in 1919.

He said the cold snap was “definitely very much early.”
