Weekend cold spell sets new records on Vancouver Island

Cold weather broke some Island records over the weekend, but more moderate temperatures have arrived. “We’ve just completely switched to a warmer stretch here,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan.

Cold weather broke some Island records over the weekend, but more moderate temperatures have arrived.

“We’ve just completely switched to a warmer stretch here,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan.

Campbell River and ­Nanaimo were among the weekend cold spots, he said.

“Generally, we talk more about maximum ­temperatures being broken with climate change.”

Campbell River had a low of -4.2 C on Saturday, beating -2.4 C from 2004. Sunday was -6.3, beating -2.8 from 1978.

Nanaimo was at -4.4 on ­Sunday, well below the -2.8 set in 1919.

Castellan said Victoria came close to a record low at 0.4 C Sunday at Gonzales. The record for the day is zero, set in 1919.

He said the cold snap was “definitely very much early.”
