Nanaimo RCMP are asking the public for information after a “vicious” attack by a man wielding a pipe.

The attack happened about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in front of the Dorchester Hotel on Chapel Street.

Police received several calls from witnesses and arrived to find a 28-year-old woman with significant but non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman told police she had just left the hotel when she was suddenly set upon and that she managed to fight her attacker off.

The man ran off along Front Street and witnesses reported seeing him jump into a white GMC pickup parked across from 38 Front St.

The vehicle headed north on Front Street.

The victim decided not to go to hospital and was treated at the scene by B.C. Ambulance paramedics.

The suspect is described as white and heavy set with a beard. He was wearing dark clothing.

Police are canvassing the area for video-surveillance footage and are asking any motorists with dash cams who were on Front Street, Commercial Avenue or Terminal Avenue from 7 to 7:45 p.m. to contact them at 250-754-2345.
