Charges laid in Coquitlam store stabbing

Charges have been laid in a stabbing that took place inside a Coquitlam grocery store last summer, according to Coquitlam RCMP.

Police have confirmed that a Surrey man and a Vancouver man have been charged in was has been identified as a targeted attack against two other people.

The stabbing took place inside a busy Real Canadian Superstore at Westwood Mall on Lougheed Highway on Aug. 2, 2018, with the assailants running outside the store and the two victims taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At the time, parts of the store were cordoned off to let police conduct their investigation.

Now that charges are approved, police say they want to let the public know the incident that took place in full view of the public has been resolved.

“As police we understand how upsetting these public incidents can be,” stated Cpl. Michael McLaughlin in a press release. “Thorough investigations take time but we want people to know that we don’t let these incidents slide. We are always working to keep our community safe.”

Deshawn van Nguyen (also known as Deshawn Quesnelle), a 22-year-old from Vancouver, has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Also charged is Desmond Gary Russell, a 22-year-old from Surrey, who is facing two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Both men were known to police, McLaughlin further stated.
