New Westminster residents bake up a delicious pies for Pride

It’s a tough job, but someone had to do it.

The battle for pie-making supremacy recently returned to the New West Farmers Market with this year’s Pie for Pride competition. Rish Koya, founder of Royal City Wrestling, Const. Wendy Bowyer of the New Westminster Police Department, school trustee Anita Ansari, New West Pride secretary Véronique Boulanger and New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian judged the event.

Bakers contributed seven pies, with Hailey Finnigan’s clever creation being named Best Overall Pie.

“She made an apple, gruyere and thyme pie which she described as ‘sophisticated, complex, versatile. The Helen Mirren of pies,’” said market manager Lily Nichol in an email to the Record. “This pastry equivalent of Masterpiece Theatre will take you from the familiar lands of sweet to new adventures in the exotic world of savory.”

Other tasty entries included: a blueberry pie; a bourbon peach/blackberry pie with a rainbow crust; a strawberry/rhubarb/cherry pie; an apple pie with cinnamon rolls; an apple/strawberry pie; and a peaches and cream pie.

Once the judges finished sampling the pies and selecting the winners, the remaining pies were divvied up and slices were sold, with proceeds going to New West Pride.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in another wonderful year of Pie for Pride at the New West Farmers Market,” Nichol said. “We are proud to be able to support our amazing community and inspiring Pride Society.”

The New West Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in Tipperary Park until Oct. 10.
