Mmmm, pie. Judges will be selecting winning home-made pie entries at this week's New West Farmers Market.

The battle for pie-making supremacy returns to the New West Farmers Market this week.

The Pie for Pride pie contest is taking place at this week’s farmers market, which is at Tipperary Park on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. Entries should be dropped off between 4:30 and 5:15 p.m.

Homemade pies will be judged in several categories including Best Flavour Combination, Best Crust, Most Unique Ingredients, Best Use of Local Ingredients and Best Overall Pie. Judging takes place at 5:30 p.m.

Lily Nichol, market manager, said community members are invited to enter their pies into the contest. Once judging is complete at 6 p.m., she said individual slices of pie will be sold, with proceeds being donated to New West Pride.

Rish Koya, founder of Royal City Wrestling, is looking forward to being one of the judge’s in this year’s bake-off.

“It’s going to be a fun event,” Koya said. “Where else do you get to eat fresh-baked pie?”

Other judges include Const. Wendy Bowyer of the New Westminster Police Department, school trustee Anita Ansari, a representative from New West Pride and P.J. Justice.

P.J. Justice?

According to Koya, P.J. Justice (aka New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian) made his debut at Royal City Wrestling’s July 17 show at the New West Pride street festival. He said three wrestlers competed in a triple-threat match, with P.J. Justice offering his managerial services to the winner.
