Quayside residents are invited to learn more about issues affecting their neighbourhood and New West.

The Quayside Community Board is holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Hyack North ballroom at Inn at the Quay.

Along with regular business like reports from the board’s executive and the presentation of the 2020 board of directors, the event includes announcement of 2019 community service winners.

Features of this year’s AGM include a visit from New West Coun. Jaimie McEvoy, who will be discussing the city’s plan for tackling climate change. Representatives from the New Westminster Police Department and New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services will also be attending.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Info at www.quaysideboard.com.

Sher Vancouver is presenting a screening the documentary My Name Was January on Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave. The screening, part of the IMPACTS Film Series, will be followed by a discussion with producer Alex Sangha and guest.

The documentary is a tribute to January Marie Lapuz, a transgender Filipino woman who was murdered in New Westminster in 2012, but the film focuses on Lapuz and not the murder. The screening is free but you can register at Eventbrite.ca (search for film screening: My Name Was January.)
