Laughter is the best medicine - and New West residents are being invited to take part in a new series of virtual laughter yoga classes.

Suffering from COVID-19 stress?

Laugh it off – literally.

New Westminster residents are invited to take part in a new series of free laughter yoga classes.

The classes are being led by laughter yoga teacher Shelley Nessman.

They’re being brought to New West folks thanks to the efforts of local resident Meaghen Taylor-Reid, who’d been participating in a different laughter yoga group with her daughter and loved it. They wanted to start one locally, so Taylor-Reid applied for one of the Vancouver Foundation’s COVID response grants.

Once Taylor-Reid found out she’d landed a grant, she got the classes up and running right away.

The Laughter Yoga Metro Vancouver website notes that laughter yoga combines yoga-based deep breathing, gentle stretching, laughter exercises and playful games and activities to get participants laughing.

“Laughter helps the heart, relieves pain, eases feelings of stress, burns calories and boosts your immune system,” a write-up about the classes notes.

The New West classes are being billed as “fun for all ages and stages” and are being offered for free.

They’re set for May 28, June 2, June 11, June 25, July 2 and July 9 at 11 a.m.

To receive your Zoom link and code to take part, email laughing.shelley@gmail.com and put New West in the email subject line.
