Opinion: Having a dog in New West 'comes with responsibilities'

I’m taking a break from COVID-19 to talk about taking care of our community. Sure, there are more important issues going on, but that doesn’t mean people can just toss away their sense of decency. For example, the photo attached to this column.

I’m taking a break from COVID-19 to talk about taking care of our community.

Sure, there are more important issues going on, but that doesn’t mean people can just toss away their sense of decency.

For example, the photo attached to this column. It was sent in by a woman named Heather who doesn’t understand the mentality of dog owners who think it is OK to deposit their bags of dog feces in containers meant for litter. The photo attached was taken just a little after 3 p.m. on Wednesday outside of the corner store on 10th Street and 3rd Avenue.

“As you can see the litter bin is overfull and the A-holes have begun leaving bags of waste on the ground below,” wrote Heather, who didn’t want her last name used for fear of incurring the wrath of dog owners. “Many of the bags are not even tied shut and the dog (poop) is literally spilling out onto the sidewalk. This is not just an eyesore but a public health risk.

“Owning a dog comes with responsibilities and one of those should be to take you own damn (poop) home and put it in your home garbage. City workers should not be expected to have to pick up after lazy, irresponsible dog owners.”

Heather is equally angry at dog owners who don’t pick up the poop at all, especially around the boardwalk near River Market.

“I have to walk on the roadway because the sidewalk there is literally covered in dog (poop).”

Again, I get that the world is crumbling before our very eyes, but that doesn’t mean we have to descend into chaos.

We still need to take care of New West. City workers are busy right now trying to ensure certain ignorant people keep their social distance on city land.

It’s bad enough that we need to expend resources to protect people from themselves – dog owners need to do their part during this trying time.

We all do.
