Anti-TMX protests held at Burnaby MP offices, including Jagmeet Singh

This week the Trans Mountain Expansion Project announced an “immediate return to work” now that the project has been re-approved, giving contractors 30 days to mobilize equipment and commence the process of hiring workers, procuring goods and services, and developing detailed construction work plans. The city of Coquitlam is monitoring the work closely because some of the pipeline will be dug under city streets in the Pacific Reach industrial park.

Organizers came out Wednesday morning with large banners to two Burnaby MP offices – Burnaby South MP Jagmeet Singh and Burnaby-North Seymour MP Terry Beech - demanding the Trudeau government include cancelling the Trans Mountain pipeline as part of its Throne Speech.

Protesters are with Climate Convergence and they said the reason they included Singh – leader of the federal NDP – was to demand that opposition parties make this a prerequisite for their vote of confidence in the government.

“Anything less would be a continuation of the 'business as usual' politics which got us into this mess in the first place,” Climate Convergence organizer Alison Bodine said, in a statement. “TMX is the litmus test we can’t afford governments and political parties to keep failing.”

Singh is on the record as opposing the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which terminates in Burnaby, but project opponents have continually asked him to make cancelling TMX a condition for supporting the minority Trudeau government.

“The … taxpayer dollars wasted on buying and building the TMX pipeline would be much better spent in helping the poor and working people most impacted by the government of Canada’s disastrous response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Bodine.
