Opinion: This Toronto clown doesn't think Burnaby health workers are heroes

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced some pretty hot takes from anti-vaxxers and “freedom” truthers. Here’s another hot take and it comes from “Simon in Toronto,” who wrote me to complain about one of my recent columns.

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced some pretty hot takes from anti-vaxxers and “freedom” truthers.

Here’s another hot take and it comes from “Simon in Toronto,” who wrote me to complain about one of my recent columns.

The column was about “Daryl from Burnaby” (none of these cowards ever seem to use their last names) and him whining about the noise from the 7 p.m. cheer for front-line health workers who are risking their lives during the pandemic. I also cheer at 7 p.m. thinking of all of the other workers, including servers and grocery store clerks, who are also risking their lives.

“Simon in Toronto” started off by also complaining about the noise’s impact on his delicate ears.

“I’ve been bloody annoyed by the incessant noise since it began,” he said. “And it’s just noise. A cacophony of pots, pans, car horns, bells, etc. There is nothing harmonious, pleasing nor enjoyable about the damn noise!! I eagerly await the day that it comes to an end.”

Oh, but “Simon in Toronto” – doubled-down on the stupid by going after health-care workers themselves.

To him, these health professionals aren’t heroes and deserve zero credit.

After all, it’s their “job” and they get paid for it.

“When you’re being paid to perform a task, no matter how unpleasant or dreadful it may be, it’s called a job. Being on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic does not make you a hero. It’s your bloody job. People like you with your mindless drivel are the ones who have made heroism ordinary. Just like words such as racism, discrimination have been rendered meaningless through indiscriminate usage.”

Ah, there you go – another white dude who also hates when people call things racist when white dudes don’t think something is racist.

That’s a pretty tell-tale comment.

“Simon in Toronto” also added this: “Unlike you, I don’t need more heroes. Just people who’d shut up and do their damn jobs.”

Wow, he’s such a tough guy, isn’t he? A real man’s man who hates noise and doesn’t like all this talk about racism and heroes.

Sorry, but it’s not normal to be around highly contagious diseases that could easily kill a person, no matter if it’s a hospital worker or someone employed in a care home. Health-care workers around the world are dying just by doing their “jobs” during extraordinary circumstances.

If anyone needs to “shut up” it’s “Simon in Toronto.”
