This is the Burnaby fish and chips you eat on cheat day

Writing about fish and chips could be dangerous territory for me because I have a lot of friends from England. The British are pretty finicky when it comes to fish and chips – it’s a staple there, of course.

Writing about fish and chips could be dangerous territory for me because I have a lot of friends from England.

The British are pretty finicky when it comes to fish and chips – it’s a staple there, of course.

But I don’t think I’m going out on a culinary limb by writing about my life-long love affair with Cockney Kings.

I grew up just minutes away from this Burnaby institution, which opened in 1965 – one of the few businesses in Burnaby that actually opened before I was born. (I’m that old.)

I went to high school at Burnaby North, just steps away from Cockney Kings, and dropping by for a meal was a nice treat after school was out and before soccer practice started.

Cockney Kings just does it right. Soft and tender, with batter that doesn’t make you feel like you could lube your car with the grease coming off the fish.

I’ve stated before my love for really thin chips, but Cockney Kings are the one exception to that rule. Their slaw is also so good I have to get a large order.

They also do prawns and oysters and mushy peas.

For a kick, try the shrimp tacos or the battered hot dogs.

This is the place you go when it’s your diet cheat day of the month. Rich and decadent.

DISCLAIMER: I have not been compensated in any way for writing about this food outlet. They don’t even know I am writing about them.
