Chances are you’ve heard the powerful winds swirling through Burnaby on Wednesday night as a storm that brought heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures turned into gale-force winds.

Those winds have knocked out the power to thousands of North Burnaby tonight and led to firefighters battling a weird fire involving high-voltage wires (see the video below).

At 7:15 p.m., Burnaby firefighters were called to Holdom Avenue and Curtis Street for a report of wires down.

When firefighters arrived, they found high-voltage wires on the ground arcing and burning – the video shows the fire sparking into the air. They closed the road and requested BC Hydro to attend as soon as possible. When BC Hydro arrived, workers turned off the power so firefighters could put out the fire.

Power was knocked out for 2,600 properties, according to BC Hydro.
