Vancouver police have revealed a dramatic takedown in Burnaby over the weekend resulted in the arrest of two alleged gang members suspected in a murder plot aimed at a Downtown Eastside drug trafficker.

The VPD’s emergency response team and K9 units descended on the area near Patterson and Willingdon avenues at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

They arrested two men on the street Vancouver resident Brian Kiraly-Miller, 26, and New Westminster resident Stefan Janic, 25.

Police dogs helped in the arrest and “made contact” with the suspects, according to spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison.

“I don’t know if it was a full-on bite,” he said.

Addison said the suspects were treated on scene before being taken to jail in Vancouver.

Both have since been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

A third man – Vancouver resident Cameron Oppenheim, 26 was arrested in Vancouver the following day and charged with conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the same investigation.

The charges are relate to an investigation launched by Vancouver police last month, after it learned of an alleged conspiracy involving members of the Redd Alert and Independent Soldiers – organized crime groups that are active in drugs, weapons and violence in the Downtown Eastside, according to the VPD.

Escalating violence around Vancouver’s Oppenheimer Park and in the Downtown Eastside sparked a number of investigations targeting organized crime groups, police said, and extra officers were deployed throughout the neighbourhood.

“This is a major break in the VPD’s ongoing efforts to reduce gang violence and protect vulnerable people who live in the Downtown Eastside,” Addison said of this week’s arrests. “We will continue to target those who prey on the vulnerable and incite violence in the community.”
