Opinion: ‘Mike in Alberta’ wants people to make false police reports about the ‘screaming Christian’

More reaction is rolling in about my Saturday blog about the “screaming Christian” who rants near Burnaby’s Metrotown SkyTrain station. And one of these reactions is from “Mike in Alberta” and it’s a real doozy.

More reaction is rolling in about my Saturday blog about the “screaming Christian” who rants near Burnaby’s Metrotown SkyTrain station.

And one of these reactions is from “Mike in Alberta” and it’s a real doozy.

“Mike in Alberta” was upset that I wrote this blog (you can read it here), saying that the man is “obviously mentally ill and needs help.”

I don’t know that the man is mentally ill. People often use that as an excuse to blow off terrible behaviour, especially by white males.

But then he comes up with this piece of terrible advice about how to deal with the situation.

“For the poor, poor downtrodden neighbours who have to witness such foul language and reality, they can phone the police,” he writes. “There are crimes against the code here, I'm sure, but maybe you catch more flies with honey? I'll give you a hint. Phone the Burnaby RCMP and say that a man is shouting obscenities at the Metrotown SkyTrain station. Then say he threatened your life. Then say he may or may not have had a weapon. That should do it.”

Yikes.

For the record, it’s illegal to file false police reports. It’s also reprehensible that anyone would think this is a good idea on how to deal with a situation.

If the “screaming Christian” does, indeed, suffer from a mental illness, then I do hope he gets some help.

But this is not the way to do it. Sadly, there are people who do think this way and more than you’d think.
