A resident of Burnaby’s George Derby Centre has tested positive for COVID-19.
A Fraser Health rapid response team is at the site and communication with residents and families is underway. The resident is currently in self-isolation at the facility.
This is now the third care home in Burnaby that has seen an outbreak, the term used by Fraser Health, in the past week, after outbreaks at Burnaby’s Derby Manor, announced Friday, and Dania Home, where a staff member tested positive.
George Derby Centre is owned and operated by George Derby Care Society. The facility provides long term care in a separate building on a campus of care that also includes Derby Manor, an independent living facility.
“This outbreak is limited to the long-term care building,” said Fraser Health. “Currently, there is no evidence that the outbreaks at Derby Manor and George Derby Centre are linked. The staff member who tested positive for COVID-19 as part of the outbreak at Derby Manor announced earlier (on Friday) did not work at George Derby Centre.”
Fraser Health said it has implemented the following:
- Staffing levels will be maintained to provide resident care.
- Visitors are restricted throughout the facility.
- Staff and residents movement in the facility has been restricted.
- Cleaning and infection control measures have been enhanced.
- Residents, families and staff are being notified.
- Twice a day screening of all staff and residents.
“During this time, Fraser Health has additional presence at the site to take any further actions required and support the facility,” said the health authority. “This includes dedicated people to address quality, answer questions from staff, residents and family, and provide active checks of symptoms with staff and residents.”
