A geophysics professor with Asperger’s syndrome needs to learn to dance for an awards dinner. He approaches a Broadway dancer to teach him - and there unfolds the story of Mark St. Germain’s Dancing Lessons.

The Western Canadian premiere of the American playwright’s work is onstage Oct. 4 to 20 at the Jericho Arts Centre.

It’s being brought to the stage by Naked Goddess Productions, a Jessie Richardson Award-nominated company that was co-founded by Burnaby resident Sandra Medeiros. Medeiros, the company’s artistic director, also stars in the production alongside Andrew Coghlan.

The play, described as “heartwarming and humorous,” traces the relationship that grows between the professor and the dancer – who is recovering from an injury that may yet end her dancing career permanently.

“As their relationship unfolds, they are both caught off guard by the discoveries they make about each other and themselves,” says a press release.

The play is directed by Sarah Rodgers, with choreography by Melissa Sciaretta. Nico Dicecco is the stage manager and sound designer, with Ariel Slack on scenic design, Taylor Janzen on lighting design, Ella Heatley-Mulhall on costumes/props and Trevor Meyer on video production.

Dancing Lessons is onstage at the Jericho Arts Centre, 1675 Discovery St., Vancouver, from Friday, Oct. 4 to Sunday, Oct. 20, with a preview night on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Tickets are $20 to $25, with pay-what-you-will performances on Oct. 9 and 16. There’s also a relaxed performance on Oct. 10.
