What kinds of things would you like to see at Burnaby's libraries?

Burnaby Public Library is one of the first libraries in Metro Vancouver to eliminate fines for overdue materials.

Beginning July 13, patrons will not be charged for overdue items including books, DVDs, audiobooks and CDs. Existing late fines will also be cancelled.

“Burnaby is an inclusive city and our libraries are welcoming spaces that provide residents equal access to resources,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, in a news release. “Eliminating fines is a very important step in reducing barriers to library services and empowering residents on their path to lifelong learning.”

Burnaby is the largest library system in B.C. to go fine-free. North Vancouver City Library eliminated late fines in May, and other cities in Western Canada that have done so include Creston, Smithers, Whistler, Calgary and Edmonton.

The elimination of late fines comes as Burnaby Public Library reopens its branches for limited services. As of July 13, library patrons can pick up items on hold without an appointment, marking the end of Paper Bag Pickup service. Visitors are also welcome to access library computers, printers and WiFi in designated spaces. Other library areas are not yet available for browsing or meeting.

“We are excited to open our doors again and to continue serving the community, including our most vulnerable residents,” said Library board chair Jeffrey Yu. “Providing much-needed access to books, WiFi and computer services helps our community thrive.”

To ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff:

  • Staff will limit the number of patrons inside.
  • Patrons will be asked to limit their visit to an hour or less.
  • Sanitation stations are available throughout branches.
  • Plexiglass has been installed at all service desks.
  • Staff are available to provide assistance, while maintaining physical distancing.

Branch hours:Monday (10am-5pm); Tuesday to Thursday (10am-7pm); Friday (10am-5pm); Saturday (10am-4pm); Sunday (noon-4pm)
