Choking smoke will be replaced a heavy weather system in Burnaby.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver as a series of “vigorous frontal systems” bear down on the region, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
As the first active storm cycle of the fall season, the leading system will hit Vancouver Island Tuesday night, and spread into the Lower Mainland by Wednesday morning, Sept. 23.
The intensity of rainfall will vary across the region, and range from 15 to 40 millimetres, according to Environment Canada. While some parts of West Vancouver Island could be hit with over 100 millimetres of rain, Burnaby could see somewhere between 50 and 100 millimetres of rain between Wednesday and Thursday.
The rain will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds peaking near the water early Wednesday up to 70 kilometres per hour.
The special weather statement applies to:
- Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
- Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
- Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
- Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
- Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
Environment Canada predicts the presence of leaves on the ground along with the heavy rain will lead to localized flooding, and strong winds may knock out power in some neighbourhoods.
Wet weather is forecast to continue through Friday and Saturday.
Environment Canada warns it could issue rain and wind warnings as the systems get closer.
