The City of Burnaby is looking to hire a company for a major creek project in South Burnaby to stem erosion in the water system.

Two construction projects - one being creek and culvert rehabilitation for Byrne Creek at 17th Avenue and the other a slope remediation project at 5798 McKee St. – have been posted on the BC Bid website.
The creek-and-culvert rehabilitation project includes in-stream creek reconstruction work, such as clearing and grubbing, tree removal, import and placement of approximately 2,000 tonnes of various granular materials, installation of approximately 34 metres of reinforced box culvert and concrete headwall, flow control structures, landscaping and associated works. Erosion and sediment control plans, dewatering and creek flow bypass, and environmental monitoring are a requirement for the duration of the work.

The supporting bid documents detail more about the project:

  • Reconstruct a 60 m section of Byrne Creek upstream of the 17th Avenue culvert with materials suitable to improve salmonid rearing and spawning habitat
  • Stabilize a 20 m section of eroding creek bank downstream of the 17th Avenue culvert.

The slope rehabilitation project includes a geogrid reinforced and compacted angular gravel retaining wall approximately 4m high and 8m wide along with clearing and grubbing, stripping, common excavation and planting.
