An elderly man is in serious condition after being struck by a transit bus in Burnaby Monday morning.

First responders were called to Imperial Street and Royal Oak Avenue at 6:20 a.m. for reports a pedestrian had been hit by a bus at the intersection, according to Burnaby RCMP.

On scene, crews found an 82-year-old man with serious injuries.

He remains in hospital in serious condition, according to a press release Monday afternoon.

“While the circumstances of what led up to the collision are still under investigation, it is believed that the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when he was struck,” stated the release.

Translink communications staff confirmed a Coast Mountain Bus Company vehicle had involved in the crash.

It had been out of service at the time and there had been no passengers on board, according to Translink.

Burnaby RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with dashcam video of it to contact them at 604-646-9999.

To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Police are also urging pedestrians to make sure they are visible, particularly in the early morning and late evening, and to use marked crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway.
