Burnaby residents can now report some crimes using their computers and smart phones.

Burnaby RCMP launched a new online crime reporting tool this week for reporting certain non-emergency crimes.

All that’s needed is a valid email address and access to a computer or smart phone to report crimes for which there are, as yet, no suspects or witnesses, and follow-up by a police officer is not required.

Examples include damage to property under $5,000, a hit-and-run to an unoccupied vehicle or property, theft under $5,000 and traffic complaints but only if no witnesses or suspects have been identified, there are no surveillance images available, the damaged property or vehicle will cost less than $5,000 to repair, and the stolen items don’t include personal identification, firearms, licence plates or decals.

The new online crime reporting tool is designed to make reporting certain crimes more convenient while at the same time allowing call takers and frontline personnel to focus on higher priority calls, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The tool is already up and running at some other Lower Mainland RCMP detachments and is being rolled out in phases, a press release said.

“Crime reporting is an essential part of determining how and where policing resources are deployed in our city,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the release. “In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to our community virtually to help them learn more about the tool and the types of crime that it can be used to report.”
