For a Valentine's Day, Friday provided more than just flowers and chocolates for the Burnaby South Rebels senior girls basketball team.

It also came with a passage to the B.C. 4-A championships, thanks to a heroic performance in the Fraser North zone playdown third-place game.

Up against No. 5-ranked Heritage Woods Kodiaks of Port Moody, the unranked Rebels responded with a strong effort en route to a 64-60 victory at Gleneagle Secondary in Coquitlam. The win locked up the final third position for the Fraser North zone, although Heritage Woods will have one final shot in a wildcard game this week against North Surrey.

Fitting for Valentine's that it was a winning pair that netted them the B.C. berth, as the Rebels had to secure an hours-earlier 60-40 decision over the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils to advance to the third-place battle.

They were put briefly on the ropes after a tough 107-68 semifinal setback on Thursday to No. 2-ranked Riverside.

Earning an all-star award was Burnaby South senior Laini Glover.

Terry Fox, who entered the tourney as the No. 6-rated team in the province, upset the Rapids 92-89 in the North zone final on Friday.

The Burnaby Central Wildcats were eliminated from the tourney Friday morning in a 66-41 defeat at the hands of Heritage Woods.

The provincials run Feb. 26 to 29 at the Langley Events Centre.
