One man is in custody after allegedly threatening people in downtown New Westminster this morning (Friday).
At approximately 11:45 a.m., a male was observed by a New Westminster Police Department officer in the area of 8th Street and Columbia Street displaying “assaultive and threatening behaviour,” read a police statement.
“The officer who observed this behaviour called for backup while maintaining visual contact with the male. When additional officers arrived the male produced a weapon. Officers attempted to de-escalate through verbal commands, which were not effective, and the male remained non-compliant.”
The video embedded in this story shows the man being taken down.
Police said an officer used a conductive energy weapon, “which was ineffective. Ultimately, an officer deployed a less-lethal extended range impact weapon which allowed officers to safely approach and arrest the male.”
