South Delta Newcomers is back with its monthly meetings starting Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7:15 p.m. at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. The group welcomes new and returning members from Ladner, Tsawwassen and Point Roberts. Guest speaker will be from the BC and Alberta Guide Dogs.

The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m. The next meeting is on Tuesday, Sept. 24. With monthly guest speakers and interest groups, the club is dedicated to the promotion of education and improvement of the status of women. Membership is open to all women who wish to engage in advocacy, hear a variety of speakers and join special interest groups (a university degree is not a pre-requisite). All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Intermediate level Spanish conversation meetings take place in the Tsawwassen Library every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. The next dates are Sept. 24 and Oct. 8 and 22. They are not classes and are not suitable for beginners. For more information call or text Aidan at 360-350-9155.

Want to be creative and do something for others? Do both at Random Acts of Kindness on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library. Ages 8+. Come again on Oct. 22 and Nov. 26.

Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Tsawwassen Mills Training Room (enter at Entrance 4, turn left past Old Navy, and it's between Yogibo Bean Bags & Yogen Fruz). The Delta Photo Club presents a two-part introduction to digital photography workshop with acclaimed photographer Francois Cleroux. The classes will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at KinVillage in Tsawwassen on Wednesday, Sept. 25 and Wednesday, Oct. 30. Guests are welcome for $15/class or $25 for the two, payable at the door. Classes are free for members in good standing of the Delta Photo Club.

St. Andrew's Church is hosting a Single Parent Free Dinner Gathering. Included are free kiosks, two guest speakers (Sophie Nenno and Vince Olfert), childcare with a special program and prizes. Event is on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Tsawwassen Alliance Church gymnasium. All single parents and their children are welcome (includes those who are now widowed, divorced, unmarried, foster or adoptive parents). The Ladner Pioneer Library invites you to participate in Bad Art Day on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 3 to 4 p.m. The library will provide the wacky art material, you make the bad art. Create something truly dreadful and have a chance to win a prize. Ages 12+. Registration required.

Delta Nature presents a talk by Ron Long on the amazing game parks of Namibia and Botswana on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen.The free talk will include points of natural and human history but will concentrate on the incredible bird and animal diversity of Etosha and Chobe national parks. Reading Buddies is a six-week program at Ladner Pioneer Library that pairs children in grades K-3 with high school student volunteers for 45 minutes of reading practice each week. It is a great way to improve reading skills in a safe, fun and friendly environment. Registration now underway and the program starts on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited.

Deltassist has several new counselling groups starting in September. Groups include: Healthy Relationship and Stress Management, From Safety to Self-Compassion and Connection, Boundaries and Assertiveness, Caring Dads, Empowered Women, and Understanding Anger. Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. Then consider joining a safe and supportive free group for bereaved adults to share with and listen to others in similar situations, and learn to navigate your grief process. Recent loss due to suicide and want the support of others in similar circumstances? Join a free adult Suicide Grief Support Group where you can share your feelings and thoughts in a safe and supportive environment, learn about coping strategies and resources, and develop community with others. Are you an adult living with cancer or serious illness and would like to relax body and mind? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s free Relaxation Circle where you will learn and practice relaxation techniques and experience soothing touch by volunteers, guided imagery and live music by a music therapist. Looking for meaningful volunteer work that supports a culture of caring and respect? Then consider applying to the Delta Hospice Society’s Introductory Hospice Volunteer Training Program that starts on Sept. 30. Volunteers companion/support individuals and families at home and the hospice, work at the Centre for Supportive Care’s reception and lending library, participate in support groups, offer complementary therapies and provide vigils so people don’t die alone. Cyclists who want to ride with others for fun and fitness can meet in the Ladner Pioneer Library parking lot Tuesdays and Thursdays weather permitting. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Would you like to get together with like-minded people to share ideas, techniques and good conversation? Knit & Stitch is offered at all three Delta libraries. It runs Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library, Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Tsawwassen Library and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. at George Mackie Library. All ages and abilities are welcome.

The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is interviewing potential volunteers to serve as crew or support personnel for its Delta Lifeboat. Professional training is given in seamanship, navigation, medical, and search and rescue techniques. Contact John at 604-760-5218 for more information.

Have you attended a suicide bereavement support group and want to connect with others with similar experiences on an ongoing or occasional basis? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. 50+/SENIORS

Hatha yoga classes at KinVillage Community Centre taught for all levels by mature, certified and experienced yoga instructors. Your body will thank you. Bring your mat Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:15 to 10:30 a.m., to Vidal Court, 5492-11th Ave. Drop-in fees are $7 for members and $8 for non-members or save money with a 10 punch card for members ($67.20) and non-members ($72.80).

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre is holding its annual open house Sept. 16 to 21. Drop in and enjoy free fitness classes, free workshops, free guest speakers, daily draws, dance party and much more. The week ends with a fundraising shredding event on Saturday, Sept.21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration for ElderCollege classes began Sept. 16. There are classes in history, climate change, lifestyle, travel, visual and performing arts, and technology. Jammers at McKee is not just a musicians' jam session, it's a concert and dance as well. This month, as part of McKee Open House, it will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner. Free admission, coffee, tea and sweets.

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre needs new members for its carpet bowling club that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is only 50 cents.

A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

T.A.G. Challenge (Sport Showdown) on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. is seeking teams for friendly competition at Delta Gymnastics. Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe, 1521-56th St., Tsawwassen, is having a home décor and hockey event the week of Sept. 16. There will be home décor items at a fraction of retail prices and hockey gear, including skates, equipment, bags and more.

The Wander Inn Cafe opens again on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Lighthouse Church, 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd. A great lineup of local performers will delight the audience: Nikki Schmidt (pop), Raynell Hagerman (pop/jazz), Emmett Hatlelid (jazz) and featured singer/guitarist Rachel Chatoor who has been part of the local music scene since the early 1990s. Suggested $7 donation covers beverages, goodies and entertainment.

The Happy Wanderers are looking for singers, any age, male and female, who would like to join the group for a “singalong” of old type group for seniors four times a month for one hour. Group starts on Sept. 5 and will sing every Thursday at 2 p.m. Call Ann Baranszky at 604-940-0423.

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Loades of Music daytime concert band has commenced a new season. Band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
