Tsawwassen's Megan and Nicole McNamara had an outstanding season at the university, international and pro levels of beach volleyball. There could be a venue in South Delta for more people to play the sport.

Beach volleyball could be coming to Delta.

The Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission last week discussed a staff recommendation to enter into an agreement with a private company to install four beach volleyball courts in Ladner at the company’s cost.

A staff report notes Delta was approached by Urban Recreation Ltd. earlier this year with a proposal, noting the company has installed beach volleyball courts at other locations and operates a volleyball league.

Staff reviewed possible locations and determined that the most suitable would be at Delta Secondary. The proposed area is located south of Memorial Park on school district property, where a small backstop currently exists.

The report also noted Urban Recreation is interested in installing the four beach volleyball courts for a recreation league.

Staff met with the school district to discuss the possible use of the school land and came up with a proposed agreement.

If supported, Delta would oversee the installation of the courts and they would be available to the district during regular school hours daily during the school year.

Urban Recreation will have access to the courts for recreation league play four nights a week from April 1 to September 30 each year. The company would be responsible for the maintenance of the courts and prepare monthly inspection reports.

The district has agreed to provide the City of Delta use of the courts for a minimum of three years, with an option to extend the use for two additional years. Delta and the general public will have use of the courts outside of school use and the permitted time allotted to the company.

The proposal would still need the blessing of city council.
