People tend not to dig too deep into the concept of heaven. Most would prefer to imagine themselves riding horses over a country hill, strolling hand-in-hand with a lover on a golden shore or (in the case of my father) sipping coffee at a cafe while chatting with friends. The ardent Christ-follower envisions additionally an amazing music fest around the throne of God.
But for sure we don’t envision going to work! Not to burst your bubble but I have not found anywhere in the bible that suggests work is absent in heaven. In fact, work was a part of paradise in the Garden of Eden so why wouldn’t it be a part of heaven?
It was not a product of the curse but an original part of the creation. What came with the curse was the “by the sweat of our brows” bit. Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are “created to do good works.”
I cannot say for sure what work in heaven might look like but I can assure you that the curse of pain in our toil will be removed.
So as we head into this Labour Day, I pray that the pain of your toil be manageable and the fruit of your labour be joyous.
