Laura Marenych, award-winning actress, dancer and singer, is this year’s featured instructor at Bard in the Yard 2020.

In 2019 alone, Marenych placed first in Delta Idol, won the Joey Award for Outstanding Performance in a musical, and performed in the Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York. She also choreographed the successful Rock of Ages musical for South Delta Secondary earlier this year.

Many students will enjoy Marenych’s vast experience this summer.

This is the third summer of Bard in the Yard Day camps. She will teach acting for Bard in the Yard 2020 in three separate camps: July 13 to 17, July 27 to 31, and Aug. 17-21. All the camps are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All Bard in the Yard day camps take place outdoors and follow all COVID-19 Day Camp requirements (BC Camping Association guidelines). Bard in the Yard has numerous tents for any inclement weather situations as well as a dedicated washroom facility for participants. A maximum of 15 students can register per session to keep space for social distancing.

“I started Bard in the Yard in 2018 to offer a unique outdoor youth drama camp,” said Jim Martens. “I am fortunate to have such a talented instructor as Laura Marenych join us this year.”

Marenych is a proud alumnus of SDSS (2019) and Delta Youth Theatre (2016-2019). Past DYT shows include Elf (“Jovie”), The Little Mermaid (“Ariel”), Annie (“Grace”), Beauty and the Beast (“Babette”), Willy Wonka (“Mrs. Bucket) and Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins).

She was also a dedicated member of South Delta Secondary School’s Equinox Theatre having performed in Shrek (“Duloc Dancer”/Student Choreographer), Thoroughly Modern Millie (“Alice”), High School Musical (“Sharpay”), and Oklahoma! (“Laurey Williams”). She was scheduled to perform with Theatre Under the Stars this summer in Beauty and the Beast until all shows were cancelled due to COVID-19.

Marenych is also a student at Deas Island Dance and of the Delta Community Music School. She plans on attending Blanche Macdonald in the fall for their spa therapy/aesthetician program.

“I’m excited to be a part of this year’s unique Bard in the Yard Day Camps and share my enthusiasm for acting with younger students,” said Marenych. “Jim and I have worked together on DYT’s Elf and Beauty and the Beast and I know our collaboration on these camps will be just as much fun.”
