SD Newcomers welcomes members (new and current residents) from Ladner, Tsawwassen and Point Roberts. Their next meeting is Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:15 p.m. at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. Const. Lee Chapman from the Delta police Community Watch program will talk about their innovative philosophy to a safer community and sharing ideas how to avoid being targeted by scams.

 

Running on Climate is the final film in this year’s GreenFlix series. It takes you behind the scenes to see how, against all odds, a landslide Green Party victory was won right here on our doorstep. Presented by the Delta South BC Greens. Free event but donations appreciated. West Coast Seeds and Bird Studies Canada invite the public to Welcoming Back the Birds: Celebrating Winter Birds in Deltaon Sunday, Oct. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Harris Barn in Ladner. Come and enjoy artwork, kite making, photography and talk celebrating the winter birds of Delta. Gardeners and birding enthusiasts will share tips on how to make your backyard bird friendly. OWL will be onsite with a live owl and possibly other raptors. All ages welcome at free event.

 

Low Vision Support Group meets at the Ladner Pioneer Library from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Monday of most months. Upcoming meeting dates: Oct. 21 (ML Burke on seniors’ issues in Delta), Nov. 18 (Tactile Creativity) and Dec. 16 (social).

 

A Parkinson’s support group meeting will be held at KinVillage in Tsawwassen on Monday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The group is for people living with Parkinson's and/or the people who care for them. For more information, call Gloria at 604-948-0156.

To salute World Polio Day, Rotary Club of Ladner is holding “Pumpkins for Polio” sales events on Tuesday, Oct. 22, with proceeds going entirely to the Rotary’s End Polio campaign: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ladner Leisure Centre and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Delta Secondary where there will also be a pumpkin carving contest. News & Views discussion group meets at the Tsawwassen Library on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Discussion of current events on global, American, Canadian, British Colombian and local issues.    

 

The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m.  The next meeting is on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The meeting is open to the public. Guest speaker is Priye Iworima, the 2019-2020 winner of the CFUW Ecole Polytechnique Commerative Award.

 

Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Tsawwassen Mills Training Room (enter at Entrance 4, turn left past Old Navy, and it's between Yogibo Bean Bags & Yogen Fruz). All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The South Delta Caregivers’ Network offers a six-week education series and support group twice a year. The next series starts Wednesday, Oct. 23 and runs once a week from 1 to 3 p.m. The one-time fee of $40 includes the six sessions with coffee and refreshments as well as unlimited monthly drop-in support groups. Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Would you like to get together with like-minded people to share ideas, techniques and good conversation? Knit & Stitch is offered at all three Delta libraries. Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. Tsawwassen United Fall Fair is on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fair will include frozen fruit pies, New to You, silent auction, crafts, plants, bottle bar game, lunch and much more.

 

T.A.G. Challenge (Sport Showdown) on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. is seeking teams for friendly competition at Delta Gymnastics. Team building event based on an obstacle course that offers laughs, prizes and tons of fun. Teams of seven to 12 people, any gender, age or ability level, $195. Individuals can register for $25. Family Fright Fest takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ladner Community Centre, McKee Seniors Recreation Centre and area. Haunted house, trick or treating, face painting, crafts, games and more.

 

Ladner Baptist Church is hosting its annual Harvestfest Carnival on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Early admission for kids with different abilities starting at 6 to 6:45 p.m. and general admission from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. Games to play, prizes and treats to be won. Admission: $2. The Wander Inn Cafe is open on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Lighthouse Church, 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd. Be well entertained by Vancouver-based recording artists/performers John Bowman and Ranj Singh. Both will bring an eclectic mix of genres from blues/folk to Indo-Canadian folk. Suggested $7 donation covers beverages, goodies and entertainment.

 

Artfully Anonymous… until you buy it is a South Delta Artists Guild fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Especially needed now are trumpets and clarinets, or any instrument except alto sax (that section is full). Contact [email protected].

 

Loades of Music daytime concert band has commenced a new season. Band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
