The City of Delta is hoping to get some federal funds to add more electric vehicle charging stations.
On Monday, Delta council gave staff the go-ahead to submit an application to Natural Resources Canada’s zero-emission vehicle infrastructure program to partially fund the installation of 20 electric vehicle charging stations at public facilities.
Total budget for the project is $157,250, which would be split equally between the city and Ottawa if the funding request is successful.
Delta has selected six new locations: city hall public parking lot, Ladner Pioneer Library, Ladner Leisure Centre, Tilbury Ice, George Mackie Library and Sungod Recreation Centre.
According to a Delta staff report, public use of the stations would initially be free of charge, but staff would monitor usage at each location and bring forward a recommendation to council regarding fees when sufficient usage data has been collected.
Each station is expected to cost about 50 cents per hour when fully charging a vehicle, plus approximately $200 per year in operating costs.
