A Delta man has been ordered to pay more than $136,000 in restitution and serve additional jail time following a provincial court sentence for his role in setting a fire inside the Delta Police Public Safety Building in North Delta.

Corey Mario Tavares learned his sentence in a Surrey courtroom on Dec. 4.

After pleading guilty to one charge of arson in an earlier court appearance, the court ordered Tavares to pay the restitution. As well, he must submit a DNA sample, has been imposed a 10-year firearms ban and has been ordered to serve 24 more additional days in jail.

He has been in custody already for 424 days and once he is released from custody, will be on probation for three years.

DPD arrested Tavares after he set fire to the couches in the lobby in October, 2018. The sprinkler system went off and the building was evacuated. The lobby sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage.

“This was an unexpected and frightening event for our front counter staff who were there during the incident,” said DPD Chief Neil Dubord. “I’m pleased that Corey Tavares has spent more than a year in jail now, and that he was convicted on the charge of arson.

“There was substantial damage done to our building - a public building - and the judge has ordered a significant amount of restitution, which helps address that aspect of this crime.”
