For the second weekend in a row, Delta police are urging the public to not drink and drive following a rise in the number of impaired drivers stopped on Delta roads.
“We really don’t want to start an on-going segment called impaired driving updates from the weekend, but our officers are pretty concerned about what they’re seeing on our roads,” wrote DPD on their Facebook page Monday afternoon. “Despite regular reminders to plan ahead for a ride home if you’re going to consume alcohol, this weekend our officers ticketed 13 impaired drivers. Six of these drivers have been prohibited from driving for 90 days and have had their car impounded; six other drivers were given a three-day drivers’ suspension because they blew a warn reading, and one driver was served a 24-hour suspension.”
DPD asks, if you are given a 90-day suspension from driving, how will you get to work? Get your kids to school? Go holiday shopping?
“Or worse, what happens if you don’t notice that stop sign because you’ve been drinking, and you crash into a family in their car, coming back from visiting Santa at the mall? Or strike that elderly lady and her grandson, walking across the intersection, headed to a family get together that they’ll never make it to,” DPD wrote. “Our officers want everyone – including those impaired drivers – to make it back home safely. Please help us spread the message and make sure everyone gets in the habit of making a plan on how to get home before heading out.”
