Delta police continue to investigate a brazen daytime shooting Monday afternoon on Scott Road in North Delta.

Officers were called around 2:30 p.m. when gunfire was apparently exchanged between occupants of two vehicles near 120th St. and 82nd Ave.

A short time after arriving on scene, police had the area around the IHOP Restaurant and Super Store cordoned off with yellow police tape for several hours.

DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf said officers recovered numerous bullet casings.

Officers interviewed witnesses, but DPD is appealing to the public who may have relevant dash cam video, or is a witness and has not yet spoken to police, to contact DPD at 604-946-4411, and reference file 20-22716.

Speaking during Tuesday morning’s City of Delta Virtual Town Hall, DPD Chief Neil Dubord said the incident is troubling and concerning.

“Yesterday’s shooting is certainly very disturbing for us,” said Dubord. “In 2019 we had four shootings in Delta. This year, yesterday was our second, so we are doing okay in relation to the numbers, but one is even too many and quite frankly, yesterday’s was very disturbing because it was very public in a time of day that obviously could have put a lot of people at risk.”
Dubord said officers are working hard on the file.

“We are investigating this vigorously to determine what is behind it. We do know the two parties knew each other, so it was not a random shooting, but that doesn’t make it any easier and it still put people in the community at risk,” he said. “It’s our role to ensure we do whatever is possible to number one, bring the offenders to justice and number two, protect the community from future shootings.”

Dubord said there may be indications that Monday’s shooting could be tied to other conflicts that are happening in other areas of the Lower Mainland.

“We are still working on that and we are working with other cities to ensure we are partnering with police departments to work on any activity that comes through Delta as well,” he said. “We want to stop this in every community and certainly want to stop this activity here in Delta and do everything we can to protect our citizens.”
