COVID-19 isn’t stopping Team Lovely Legs from doing their annual walk for breast cancer for research, this time through the streets of Ladner on Oct. 4.

COVID-19 is not getting in the way of Team Lovely Legs.

What started as a fun initiative among regular participants of a Zumba class, has evolved into special friendships that step up for breast cancer research each year.

Team Lovely Legs has been a regular at the annual CIBC Run For The Cure that takes place in Vancouver to kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October. While the pandemic has made this year’s event virtual, Lovely Legs will still be doing their regular walk in fun pink attire through the streets and trails of Ladner this Sunday, Oct. 4.

This year’s walk is dedicated to Alice Li who lost her battle to breast cancer back in March. Each of the 10 team members will be wearing a specially made bracelet to honour their friend’s memory.

“COVID-19 is carrying on and we have no idea how long we are going to live it. Breast cancer doesn’t stop for COVID-19 and we have friend who walked with us last year who passed away,” explained team member Julie Lymburner. “Another friend had her second bout this year. It’s all-around us. We have connections through family as well.

“We met many years ago, going to Zumba classes at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Under the awesome leadership of our instructor, Danielle Hunter, we decided to support the breast cancer cause in 2015. Our bond as a group of women has grown tenfold over the years. We’ve continued to exercise together and we’ve seen one another through life’s celebrations and challenges. Along the way, some have moved to other parts of the country while others have joined us.”

So far, Lovely Legs have already raised $2,600 for this year’s event and will surpass $15,000 in donations to the Canadian Cancer Society since they made their debut in 2015. Donations can be made here

The rest of the team includes: Dawn Lincoln, Pauline Kwan, Kathleen Chan, Kim Long, Nancy Chouinard, Anke Kringhaug, Sheri Watson Mereille McKenzie-Kay and Jennifer MacKinnon.

“We will, of course, be maintaining an appropriate social distance while walking,” added Lymburner. “We hope that the people of South Delta will support us. Feel free to make a donation to our team or give us a wave or a honk if you see us walking around town on the 4th.”
