Minister’s Minute: The lightest burden of all

In the 11 th chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells us to: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 3 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (29-30).

In the 11th chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells us to:  “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 3For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (29-30).

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an incredible burden upon the shoulders of the world, and in some way we have all had to carry it. For many, the pandemic has increased the weight of already incredibly burdened lives.

All which oppresses and burdens humanity is rooted in the heaviest weight of all: the weight of sin.  St. Paul teaches us that the wage of sin is death (Romans 6: 23). But God did not intend that we should be burdened by our sin.  Out of great mercy and love, God sent Jesus Christ into the world to relieve us of this most burdensome weight.

Christ did so on the cross of Cavalry by taking the weight off our shoulders and taking it upon himself. He took our death and exchanged it for his life. He exchanged our sinfulness for his righteousness.

When you find yourself feeling weighed down by bad news and sin, turn to Jesus and listen to him.  You will find rest for your soul in God’s unconditional promise of forgiveness and new life.
