The shared use agreement includes the city and school district meeting at least once a year to review the requested use of the track for the upcoming year.

South Delta Secondary’s sports field and track will be closed for the next few weeks while maintenance work takes place, according to the school district.

Barring any unforeseen weather conditions, the work should be completed and the track reopened by mid-June, the district noted.

The track was resurfaced last summer with synthetic turf.

The school district two years ago removed the rubber track at the school, which had originally been installed for the B.C. Summer Games in 1987 but in recent years fell into in disrepair.

City council agreed to provide 50 per cent funding for a resurfacing project which had an estimated cost of $350,000.

The city and school district also worked out a shared use agreement for the track.
