The South Delta Sun Devils top the standings in the Western Conference following a 37-6 win last Friday in Victoria against the Belmont Bulldogs.

South Delta quarterback Ben McDonald continued his MVP-like season by throwing three touchdowns, two to Rhys Porteous (42 and 14 yards, respectively) and a three-yard toss to Ethan Troniak. McDonald also called his own number on a 70-yard run to the end zone and had a pair of two-point conversions.

“We were starting to click on all cylinders and even with missing a few kids we came up with a good performance,” said head coach Ray Moon. “Ben is a great player, great family here. He is able to find the open man, read the defences and at times under pressure, make something out of nothing, so he’s a great player and a great individual.”

Hunter Norman replaced McDonald midway through the fourth quarter and hit Porteous for an 87-yard TD strike and then hit Evan Davies for the two-point conversion to wrap up the scoring.

On Saturday, Vancouver College shutout New Westminster 27-0 to put both teams at 4-1 in conference play, one game behind the 5-0 Sun Devils.

South Delta hosts 3-2 Mt. Doug on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Dennison Park in Tsawwassen, while Vancouver College plays Handsworth and New West entertains Belmont.

“Mt. Doug will be a test. They have a big line, so we’re going to have to try to limit their line play, which on the offensive side is making quick hitters so their line can’t tee off on us and defensively, they swarm to the ball, so we have to gang tackle,” said Moon.

Following the Mt. Doug game, South Delta hits the road for its final conference game of the season – Friday, Nov. 1 under the lights at Mercer Stadium against New West.

“It’s going to be a battle down the stretch,” said Moon. “We have to take care of Mt. Doug first. We do have some concerns. They are a chippy team and they go after you. We can’t get caught up in penalties. It’s a very important game for us.”

The JV Sun Devils also remain undefeated following a 28-14 win over Belmont last Thursday. They are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

South Delta hosts Mt. Doug Thursday at 3:30 p.m. before wrapping its schedule Oct. 30 at Lord Tweedsmuir.
