TransLink will ease bus seating restrictions June 1, in order to accommodate the growing number of customers returning to the transit system as B.C. eases some of its pandemic control measures.

The transit authority said in a statement Wednesday that the move is in line with B.C.'s Restart Plan and that, as of next week, buses will be able to accommodate approximately two-thirds capacity before being deemed full. Bus schedules have also been restored to pre-COVID-19 service levels in order to add as much capacity as possible.

TransLink blocked off some bus seats to help promote physical distancing in late March. However, the company said Wednesday that, with ridership increasing by more than 30 per cent over the past month, demand cannot be met with the current seating arrangements on buses.

The transit authority will also resume fare collection and front-door boarding on buses June 1, following the installation of temporary plexiglass extension barriers or vinyl barriers on all buses to protect transit operators.

In the statement, TransLink cautioned that physical distancing will not always be possible on transit, and is encouraging customers to take the following steps to protect themselves and other passengers:

  • Do not take transit when sick.
  • Travel at off-peak times whenever possible.
  • Wear a non-medical mask or face covering while waiting for or taking transit if you’re able to do so.
  • Use bus seating when possible so operators can best estimate the number of customers on board.
  • Allow more time for your commute.

TransLink announced last week that disinfecting spray schedules would be doubled for buses to twice per week, in addition to daily cleaning schedules.

There will also be changes at transit hubs to help with physical distancing, where possible, including the installation of two-metre spaced decals at some bus stops and station entranceways.
