Crime Beat: Cops respond to inappropriate text, drunken ferry passengers, more

Oct. 13, 10:05 p.m., 400-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported hearing three loud bangs in the vicinity. Police conducted patrols and were advised by a civilian that a group of teenagers was using fireworks around the time of the report, before running into a residence. Police conducted a door knock and spoke to the property representative and her friends. The group admitted to using fireworks and was warned of bylaw regulations/consequences. Complainant was advised of outcome.

Oct. 13, 11:55 p.m., 5500-block of 13A Avenue: Complainant reported people drinking at Highland Park. Upon arrival, police identified three individuals. Police reminded the party of bylaw regulations. All parties cooperative and agreed to leave the park. Verbal warning only.

Oct. 14, 5:48 p.m., 500-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that her wallet and prescriptions were stolen from her vehicle. The theft occurred when her vehicle was parked at a restaurant. Her leather wallet and two prescriptions in a plastic bag underneath a jacket on the front seat were taken. Complainant advised that her passenger door does not lock and that she didn’t realize her wallet was missing until she got home to Nanaimo. Complainant advised to contact Equifax and Trans Union.

Oct. 15, 7:57 a.m., 400-block of English Bluff Road: An employee at English Bluff Elementary reported that two picnic tables had been defaced with graffiti occurring sometime over the Thanksgiving weekend. Police observed the tables were written on with black permanent markers. The school principal is aware and maintenance has been called to sand off the graffiti. Estimated cost of removal: $100. School liaison officer advised.

Oct. 16, 9:54 p.m.: Complainant reported a text message sent to her phone, but addressed to her teenage daughter, with slightly inappropriate content. Police contacted the texter, and determined another teen had found the complainant’s number and daughter’s name, and sent the message as a joke. Police warned texter against such behaviour.

Oct. 19, 8:19 p.m., Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal: Police called to ferry terminal after reports of two aggressive and intoxicated individuals. Due to intoxication both individuals asked to leave property, and they eventually departed on foot. They returned later that day, and police again responded, this time transporting both individuals to a SkyTrain station. Individuals received a 24-hour ban from ferry property.

Oct. 14, 4:33 a.m., 5000-block of 48th Avenue: Complainant called to report two youths who were breaking items from the donation bin. Upon arrival, police located two youths ages 12 and 13, who both admitted to the allegations. They advised they both had snuck out of their houses and were apologetic. The youths’ guardians attended with brooms and dust pans for the youths to clean up the mess. No other observable damage to property. Strong verbal warning given to both youths.

Oct. 14, 1:47 p.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Complainant reported a group of youths smoking marijuana behind Hawthorne Elementary. Police located the youths behind the school, but the group took off running through the park. Police seized two marijuana grinders and a longboard abandoned by the youths. Grinders submitted for destruction.

Oct. 15, 10:35 a.m., 4900-block of Linden Drive: Complainant phoned police regarding a fraudulent phone account that was opened in her name. Complainant went to the bank to take out a loan and was told that her credit score was poor due to an outstanding phone bill of $1,749. Complainant reported this information to phone company and learned the account was fraudulent. Police were informed that company’s fraud section will be handling further investigation. Phone company removed the account from the complainant’s name as she does not owe any money on the account.

Oct. 15, 12:06 p.m., 7100-block of Venture Street: Complainant reported a large garbage bin was stolen from his company over Thanksgiving weekend with the contents having been dumped in the area of Deltaport and Highway 17. Garbage has since been cleaned up. Complainant also advised the bin was lime green, large and made of metal and would have required the proper vehicle to lift and move it. Police were advised that a new bin will cost the company $15,000.

Oct. 19, 10:57 p.m., 6200-block of Brodie Road: Complainant reported a group of youths knocking on his door and then running away when he turned the lights on and opened the door. Police conducted area patrols with negative results.

Oct. 19, 8:45 p.m., 4800-block of Delta Street: Police conducted a traffic stop to check driver sobriety. Driver indicated she had consumed one glass of wine. When she blew into the approved screening device the result came back as a warn. Driver had no prior history of impaired driving, and a good driving record, and was given a three-day immediate driving prohibition. Officer used discretion and determined vehicle could be left parked roadside to be picked up later by a sober driver.
