Rotary partners with Delta to install Memorial Park BBQs

The Rotary Club of Ladner and the City of Delta have collaborated once again at Memorial Park in Ladner.

The Rotary Club of Ladner and the City of Delta have collaborated once again at Memorial Park in Ladner.

After opening the Ladner Rotary Splash Park last year, the service club joined forces with the city to install three outdoor cooking grills and renovate the adjacent gazebo.

Delta Mayor George Harvie and Coun. Dylan Kruger, as well as MP Carla Qualtrough and MLA Ian Paton, joined Rotary Club of Ladner president Bridget Jacob and club members, including project leader Irene Forcier, and city staff last month to officially open the $8,000 joint project.

The city hosted the event that included hotdogs cooked on the new grills by three volunteers of the community police station in Ladner.

Harvie said when he started with the city two decades ago, Memorial Park was a rather featureless area. Now, he said, the park is so full of life, thanks in part to the Rotary Club of Ladner, as thousands of people use it, with the Ladner Rotary Splash Park, the Christmas tree lighting in December and now the new grills.

Jacob thanked Harvie, Delta council and senior staff for the opportunity to jointly fund the new facilities. She said families in Delta have enjoyed the splash park over the past two summers and will have even more outdoor fun using the cooking and dining features.

The new facilities are next door to the Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children, adding another opportunity for children and families using that building as well as families throughout the region.
